 The Wellspring Project has been a joint effort of the PUL (Pontotoc-Union- Lee) Alliance to locate an automobile manufacturing plant in the area near where the three counties come together. The culmination of this effort came on February 27, 2007, when Governor Haley Barbour and Toyota officials announced that Toyota would build its eighth North American vehicle assembly plant at the Wellspring site in southeastern Union County. The plant will produce 150,000 of the popular Highlander sport utility vehicles annually. The new plant represents an investment of $1.3 billion and will employ approximately 2,000 when production begins in 2010.
