In 1987, the State of Mississippi passed the AHEAD program, an ambitious $1.6 billion program to construct 1,077 miles of 4-lane highways in three prioritized phases. Upgrading of U.S. Hwy. 78 passing through New Albany was included in Phase I. In 1994, the final 4-lane segment of U.S. Hwy. 78 in Mississippi was opened providing an Interstate quality highway from the Tennessee state line to the Alabama state line.
In that same year of 1994, Phase IV was added to the AHEAD program including Miss. Hwy. 15, a major north-south route through New Albany. In 2002, the AHEAD program was broadened into Vision 21, a far more extensive upgrading of Mississippi’s highways. In Vision 21, Miss. Hwy. 15 from the Tennessee state line to the Gulf Coast, was designated as an Immediate priority. The first segment of upgraded Miss. Hwy. 15 under Vision 21 is through New Albany with construction scheduled to begin in 2008. (To see a Vision 21 map visit "Downloads" under the "Resources" section of our website.)
In 2004, U.S. Hwy. 78 connecting Memphis, Tennessee and Birmingham, Alabama through New Albany was designated Future Interstate 22 by the U.S. Congress. Interstate designation will be completed upon connection with Interstate 69 at Memphis or Interstate 65 at Birmingham.
Other major highways through Union County are Miss. Hwy. 178 (old U.S. Hwy. 78) passing through downtown New Albany, Miss. Hwy. 30 connecting to four-lane U.S. Hwy. 278/Miss. Hwy. 6 at Oxford, 33 miles to the west and connecting to four-lane U.S. Hwy. 45, 26 miles to the east, Miss. Hwy. 348 connecting to four-lane U.S. Hwy. 45 at Guntown, 22 miles away.
